Le Mura di Sopra, "The Walls at the Top", sits high on the hillside in the magnificent mountain area of the Garfagnana.

This beautiful self catering Tuscan country villa dates from the 15th century and has been fully and authentically restored, carefully retaining its original character.

  • The farmhouse, which sleeps 10 complete with a full kitchen and dining seating for 12, first and second floor bedrooms with en-suite baths, a lounge with satellite TV, DVD and high speed Internet, outdoor dining for 14 on the terrace and a laundry with washer and dryer.

  • The barn, which sleeps 4 to 6 complete with a full kitchen with dining area,  dishwasher, a large bath on the main level with shower and toilet, a spacious parlour which can double as a bedroom with futons and two upstairs twin bedrooms with a large bath and toilet.

The farmhouse and barn are situated on grounds about 16 hectares (40 acres) surrounded by mature trees, olive groves, chestnuts, cypresses and fruit trees. There are two shady meadows on the high ground above the house and pool.

There are wonderful nature walks from the property and in the local area with an abundance of wildlife, wild flowers and birds such as owls and eagles.

A splendid 12 x 6 metre (50 x 20 feet) private swimming pool is surrounded by patio and grassy areas adjacent to the house. The pool and patio is in the sun all day, but there are plenty of shady areas to be found.

Outside the house is a large terrace where you can dine and marvel at the spectacular panorama and magnificent views of the Apuan Alps.  Below the patio is an outdoor cooking area with two solid stone barbecues and a wood burning pizza oven.

Our Little Part of Tuscany

The local village of Benabbio, which is a few minutes walk from Mura di Sopra, has a summer club where you can sample village life and dance under the stars on Saturday night. There is a local shop, a bar and restaurant, and a pizzeria all within walking distance from the house. The whole area has a range of restaurants from simple trattorias to sophisticated dining all very reasonably priced and serving delicious local dishes.

The spa town of Bagni di Lucca is only 3 miles away.  Historically famous for it's health-giving springs, the Bagni di Lucca of today is a bustling and charming little town enjoying a revival of its spa treatments. There are pavement cafes and good restaurants.  The baths have been renovated and offer a range of natural hot spring treatments.

The town nestles in the lush valley of the Lima River in the foothills of the Apennines surrounded by picturesque mediaeval hilltop villages, many of which are worth a day's visit.

The city of Lucca is a magical place whose origins date back to Ligurian, Etruscan and Roman times. There are still remarkable traces of the old walls and amphitheatre from 200 AD.

Modern day Lucca features parks, gardens and an unforgettable wall-top-promenade that make the historic walls absolutely unparalleled. Bikes can be hired to cycle on the walls the full circle around Lucca.

The city abounds with architectural treasures including wonderful Romanesque examples. Within the walls, Lucca is pedestrianised. Shopping is an elegant Italian experience and dining can be sophisticated or casual but always excellent and very good value

The Puccini festival is held every summer at Torre del Lago and there are also summer concerts in Lucca. The coast is nearby and is well worth a day trip.
