Lucca
The city of Lucca is a magical place
whose origins date back to Ligurian, Etruscan and Roman
times. There are still remarkable traces of the old
walls and amphitheatre from 200 AD.
Modern day Lucca features parks, gardens
and an unforgettable wall-top-promenade that make the
historic walls absolutely unparalleled. Bikes can be
hired to cycle on the walls the full circle around
Lucca.
The city abounds with architectural
treasures including wonderful Romanesque examples.
Within the walls, Lucca is pedestrianised. Shopping is
an elegant Italian experience and dining can be
sophisticated or casual but always excellent and very
good value
The Puccini festival is held every summer at Torre del
Lago and there are also summer concerts in Lucca. The
coast is nearby and is well worth a day trip.
